Anomaly Warzone Earth for iPhone/iPod Touch
Anomaly Warzone Earth. This amazingly made game is definitely a must for people that enjoy warfare/strategy style games; It’s not Tower Defence, but Tower Offence.
Anomaly Warzone Earth is set on Earth in a time where Aliens have invaded, and you’re in control of a heavily armoured squad that has to take them down - no matter what the cost. As soon as I opened this app, I knew it was something special; the graphics are amazing, and is so nicely put together. The main menu tells you that Game Centre Syncing is enabled which means you can play it on one iOS device and continue where you left off on another device (my favourite feature of ANY game, and I wish it was implemented into more games!). From the Main Menu you can also select any mission that you’ve already completed and go back to it (you’d do this if you want better badges for each mission, as you’re awarded badges at the end of every mission) & you can also do something called Squad Assault Rearmed, which as you can see from the below screenshot, I haven’t yet unlocked so once I have I’ll be sure to add a part in about that!
When you start a mission, you’re given a brief which you can skip and are taken to a specific screen with what is needed to do, or you can listen to it and are taken into the storyline of the game, and you actually feel like you’re commanding an army against the alien invasion - it makes the game that much more interesting instead of just planning what to do and doing it. When you start the first couple of missions and there are new factors in each, you’re taken through a tutorial in the game about what to do/what to use/how do to it. I kind of like that approach as separate tutorials bore me, and I’d rather learn it during the game.
After getting briefed, you then have to tactically plan out your route to complete your objective, whether it be to get to a certain place, or destroy a specific alien defence, there’s more than one way to get to it and you have to work out the easiest (or hardest if you’re feeling up to the job) way to get the objective done. You can change routes by tapping on the arrows, and is very easily done. Once you’ve done this, you go onto the actual mission.
The actual gameplay is brilliant - you’re given tools to help you through your mission such as health packs and smokescreens which decrease the enemies accuracy, and more packs are dropped as you defeat enemies so you don’t really have to be too careful about how many you use as you’re more than likely going to get more - don’t take it for granted that you’ll get, for example, that health pack before you’re dead though, it is still a strategy game after all. Also, the strategy element comes more into it as the game progresses as you’re given set amounts of money for each level and you have to choose the types of vehicle you want in the mission, depending on what it is. The graphics for the gameplay are also amazing, and they are definitely using the iPhone 4/4S retina display to their advantage - even the screenshot is triple the size of any of the other screenshot’s I’ve used!
Overall, I’d definitely recommend this game to anyone that play’s this type of game - and even people that don’t usually, because this isn’t your normal kind of strategy game, it stands out from the crowd and for that I say well done to 11Bit Studios for creating it. The only thing that I’d like to see in a future update of this is a native iPad version so that we can properly enjoy it’s high definition graphics on a bigger screen!
